VAL’S TIPS AND TRICKS FOR FISHING EAGLE LAKE:First timers as well as seasoned Eagle Lake anglers can gain and edge by reading about different methods and set ups from trolling and bait fishing under slip bobbers to fly fishing Eagle Lake successfully any time of the year. EAGLE LAKE TROUT SPAWN:Every spring California Department of Fish and Game collect eggs from the egg collection facility located on Pine Creek near Spalding. The eggs collected at the trap are used to stock Eagle Lake and other lakes as a leading propagation trout. Those trout planted in other lakes are sterilized, basically GMO. CATCH AND KEEP RECOMMENDATION:Nearly every summer (except with exceptional water quality which comes at a lake elevation around 5105 ft) as water temps in the south basin reach 70F the pH of the lake rises. The rise in pH with high water temperatures creates a lot of stress on the Eagle Lake trout being caught and released. Criteria for posting the Catch and Keep Recommendation has changed between biologists but started out at a uniform pH (all three basins) of 9.2 and has come up to 9.4 as the lake barely dropped lower than 9.2 since the water level is below our Lady’s prime. This has not been posted for several years even though the drought and water quality has been affected. More
LIVE RELEASE OF TUI CHUB: The tui chub are a native fish to Eagle Lake and provide massive schools of bait fish for the trout to fatten up on in fall to get through the winter months. It is not unusual to catch tui chub (which show up as a densely stacked school of fish between 15 and 45 ft on your depth finder) during the hottest months. Due to decreased trout planting the last 6 years, the tui chub population has increased. From 2011-2016 there was no grebe nesting. Along with the reduced trout planting and lack of predators, the tui chub population massively increased. This population needs to be kept in check despite the past protections. More
CDFG DEER FEEDING POLICY: Visitors are always amazed at the deer herd that lives in Spalding and most cannot resist feeding them by hand. The problem is that it is illegal to feed deer in California. Yes, some locals have been getting away with it for decades which is why our herd no longer migrates. Also, people are feeding the deer things that are dangerous to them without knowing it. Please refrain from deer feeding when staying in a cabin rental in Spalding, Buck’s Bay and Stones Landing. You could be killing them without knowing it.
EAGLE LAKE FISHING REGULATIONS: No fishing inside the breakwater at Eagle Lake Marina. Pine Creek below highway 44 to the mouth at Eagle Lake is closed to all fishing. Fishing season opens the Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend and ends December 31, 1 hour after sunset. More
